Notes - Martinus van den Burg . Living memories are always more fun than archive work; after all, they become more colorful as the years go by. This is in contrast to the sober information from dusty archives. That is why we would like to let a grandson of Martinus van den Burg speak here. Peter van den Burg, an enthusiastic researcher of Noordwijkerhout history, can tell us the following about his long-deceased grandfather Tinus:
"…Grandpa Martinus van den Burg was born in a house across the lane from the Groenewege farm, he married Adriana van der Raad on August 30, 1910. This was a year after his father Arie died in 1909, they went to live in his birthplace. The Van der Raad family had said to Adriana what does such a beautiful girl want with that tall guy. They had 17 children and their marriage was the best there was, Grandpa Tinus was a good man. After his marriage he had work in Hillegom loading barges with sand and he had to walk there and back 2 hours there and 2 hours back. And he and his wife had 17 children. And yet he still had time to take care of a vegetable garden, pigs, chickens and rabbits. Because of his height he was called tall Tinus, not to be confused with his son Arie who was called small (nut). Later he went to work in the flower bulbs at Klaas van der Zalm on the Westeinde. This boss had a construction company and was also his landlord, when his family became too large he could have a house built and borrow money, a little further on the Zeestraat in the year 1930. During the war the money was worthless and he could have paid off his mortgage, but he didn't, they had helped him with money for his house and now he simply paid on time. As a hobby he was a member of the theater association Hulp der Armen where he played many performances.
Another little anecdote: the boys who slept in the attic were quite rowdy and mother Adriana said "Tinus, go and say something about it". He went up the ladder to the attic, opened the hatch and stuck his bald head through it and said to those boys. If you are not quiet now, you will all get an orange, that never happened because they had no oranges and yet they were quiet afterwards. As a grandson I also remember telling you that you were allowed to sit on top of grandpa when he was sitting in his smoking chair to smooth the few hairs he still had on his head or slide them off his legs…" Peter van den Burg,
In the family of farm laborer Martinus and Adriana, no less than 17 children were born, four of whom died at a young age. Among the 13 other children, we see a distribution of ages reached that is characteristic for the period. In addition to a 28- and 43-year-old deceased within the family, we also count children who reached the age of 80 or 90.
