Arij Janszoon Duijvenvoorden is considered the progenitor of all people with that surname, worldwide. He was born around 1645 and is first mentioned with surname and reliable year in the list of "Wealthy Men" of 1672, known in Dutch history as the Disaster Year. The list concerns men between 16 and 60 years old who were deployable for the defense of the country, which was attacked by the English and the French.
In a document from 1673 we learn something about Arij's profession; he is mentioned as a debt collector in the "Familiegeld Rijnland", a registration of residents who qualify for extra tax.
We get to know ancestor Arij Janszoon Duijvenvoorden mainly as a "farmer". We would now say: farmer or rather arable farmer or cattle farmer. But according to his occupation in 1673 he was also a sheller, like many of his descendants. Other names are peeler, sheller or more modern: shell fisherman. It is certain that Arij still had shell carts at his disposal at a later age, because in 1705 he sold several carts due to financial need. The carts could be used to transport the shells from the beach to an interim storage before being delivered to lime kilns in Valkenburg, Katwijk or elsewhere on the Oude Rijn.
Arij's second marriage in 1702 with Marijtje (Maertje) Paulusdochter van 's-Gravenmade (Schrama) from Noordwijkerhout was not long-lived. She was almost 50 years old and died within a few years (1705), with whom Arij had no children. Marijtje was previously the widow of Claes Corneliszoon Vrijer.
At about 60 years old Arij married for the third time, to Baafje Wassenaar. She is a daughter of Pieter Cornelis Wassenaar and Marijtje Jansdochter 's-Gravendijck, a couple who had a house in the village centre, first on the Schippersvaart and later in the current Zeestraat; Arij must have known Baafje well. Incidentally, the marriage was only concluded a few weeks before the birth of the second child! The couple eventually had three children: Maartje (1706), Jan (1707) and Pieter (1709). Their mother Baafje was probably already well into her forties when her third child was born! All ten of Arij's children were still alive and unmarried.
A large family, but only Jan from the third marriage and Gerrit from the first are the only sons of Arij who passed on the surname (Van) Duijvenvoorden. Jan lived with his parents at Kerkeduin all his life. Gerrit at Witte Raaf.
