2 CONC his time, he came to Virginia during the colony`s crucial half century, and in the new worl
2 CONC d found a home and founded a family. The headright method of making land grants was adopted s
2 CONC oon after the colony was getting started. It was probably in this manner that Richard Casey o
2 CONC btained his land, it being thoroughly characteristic of those times. (Col. Casey found no evi
2 CONC dence that Richard was indentured.) It was this system that enabled Richard Casey and many me
2 CONC n like him to acquire property they probably could never have possessed otherwise.

1 NOTE Theophilus Bass, was the first County-Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Taney County (now part o
2 CONC f Stone County, Missouri), being appointed in 1837 by Governor Lilburn W. Boggs. Coming fro
2 CONC m a family with means, he was highly educated for one of that period, and was very industriou
2 CONC s and had taken up the work of surverying. It was while surveying the "base line" with Nathan
2 CONC iel Boone (son of Daniel Boone) that he met, wooed and won Mildred Shannon, daughter of Joh
2 CONC n David Shannon, of White River Township.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Theophilus Bass entered his land on White River (Missouri),  just a little way from Forsyth
2 CONC , on August 23, 1845), comprising about 132 acres of Government land for which he paid $1,2
2 CONC 5 an acre, but turned in Government vouchers for surveyer`s services as payment.  It was on b
2 CONC oth sides of the river and part of it became known and still is rememered as the Casey homest
2 CONC ead (not related Caseys!).  The land was sold to Levi Casey in April of 1848, for $1500 the y
2 CONC ear before Theophilus Bass died. Ill health may have been a factor in his selling this land f
2 CONC or he was not quite forty years old.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Theophilus owned NW 1/4 on the West and the NE 1/4 on the East side of the White River, givin
2 CONC g him a shore line of 1 3/4 miles on the west and 3/4 miles on the east side of the river, an
2 CONC d which comprised the new Shepherd of the Hills Estates.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He lived on the south side of White River and held court at the mouth of Bull Creek. He was t
2 CONC he sixth representative from Taney County to the 15th Gen. Assembly from Taney County, at Jef
2 CONC ferson City, in 1848-49., and died while in office March 11th 1849. He was buried at Jefferso
2 CONC n City, by Special Act of the Legislature and a tablet was erected to his memory.

2 CONT The following is taken from the proceedings of the Session of 1848-49:
2 CONT "An Act to pay funeral expenses of Hon. Theopolis Bass" Introduced and passed in the Senate m
2 CONC arch 12, 1849. Mr Mares introduced a Resolution in reference to the death of Theo. Bass, whic
2 CONC h were read, rules suspended and adopted. Mr. Hicks, introduced a Resolution autorizing Georg
2 CONC e P. Bass (brother) to draw the pay which is due Theo. Bass, late member of Taney County, dec
2 CONC eased. Adopted (House). House adopted an Act to pay funeral expenses. Senate adopted followin
2 CONC g Resolutions relating to the death of Theopolis Bass, and have also adopted House resolution
2 CONC s on the same subject. The House concurred in the Resolitions from the Senate in reference t
2 CONC o the death of T.B.

2 CONT The inscription on the tablet in the Cemetery reads:
2 CONT "Sacred to the memory of Theopolis Bass, late Representative from Taney County, Missouri, wh

2 CONT The Missouri Statesman, published at Columbia, Missouri, says on March 16th, 1849:
2 CONT "Mr. Theopolis Bass, a member of the Legislature from Taney County, and who has been seriousl
2 CONC y ill during most of the Session, died on Saturday night last. Mr. Bass, was a son of Mr. Law
2 CONC rence Bass of this County."

2 CONT In reading the preceedings of the latter part of this Session, Theopolis Bass, was absent fo
2 CONC r many days, unable to answer the roll call, but was reported from day to day as being sick a
2 CONC nd unable to atend the Sessions. At that day and age, distances were great, roads were bad, t
2 CONC ravel wa light, and news was carried slowly and largely from "mouth to mouth". Mrs. Bass, (o
2 CONC r as she was known later, Grandma Nelson,) did not know anything of her husband`s death, unti
2 CONC l weeks later a horseman came riding to her doorway, leading another horse, and announced th
2 CONC e death of Theopolis. The riderless hors was the one Theo. rode away to Jefferson City on, wi

2 CONT All of the members are complaining of colds and several are pretty sick. It is said that th
2 CONC e cholera is in St. Louis and some of the members are very uneasy for fear it will get here a
2 CONC nd if it does, we will adjourn forthwith and go home. I am unable to say when the Legislatur
2 CONC e will adjourn, but I do think it will not be a long session. I am anxious to see you and th
2 CONC e children. It would give me more pleasure to be with you and the children than all the luxur

2 CONC l his sickness which was 52 days with countinued feavour. His two brothers, George and Edwar
2 CONC d Bass, Pilee Dunkns wife and Wade Jackson was there nearly through all his sickness. He die
2 CONC d on the 11th March the day before the Legislature broke.
2 CONT I got an Act past the day we adjourned appropriating two hundred dollars to pay his funeral e
2 CONC cpenses and to erect a tomb over hus grave.
2 CONT I also interduced a resolution and got it pst authorizing George P. Bass to draw his pay a
2 CONC s a member from thre treasur which was $282.00. He is to settle off his bill both for Boardin
2 CONC g and Doctor fees and account you for the remained. His beast was at his brothers and I thin
2 CONC k George Bass was to take charge of his clothing and return all to you as soon as he could co

1 NOTE Born in Ireland, where he spent his boyhood and attended school. When eighteen years of age h
2 CONC e ran away from home and sailed on broad Atlantic toward the United States to seek his fortun
2 CONC e. He first settled in Knox County, Tennessee, at the foot of the Cumberland Mountains, regar
2 CONC ding whose picturesque inhabitants so much has been written, and in that locality he was marr
2 CONC ied and made his home until the year 1832, when he made the tedious and somewhat hazardous ov
2 CONC erland trip to Greene county, Missouri, bringing his family in a primitive wagon, and thus th
2 CONC e Masseys were among the earliest pioneers of this locality.
2 CONT He secured a tract of land just east of what is now the thriving city of Springfield, but whi
2 CONC ch was at that time an encampment of the Kickapoo Indians.
2 CONT He set to work with a will, cleared, broke and fenced his land, erected a log cabin and by pe
2 CONC rseverance and hard work became very comfortably fixed in due course and time, and was a ma
2 CONC n of influence among the early frontiersmen, his neighbours being, however, very few and mos
2 CONC t of them some miles distant, untill more Tennesseeans followed him, the Fulbrights, the Free
2 CONC mans and others.
2 CONT Although he devoted the major portion of his life to farming, he was a mechanic by trade an
2 CONC d a skilled workman. He made the first separator, or "ground-hog" tresher, ever seen in thi
2 CONC s part of the country.
2 CONT During the war of 1812, he enlisted in defense of his adopted country, gladly figting agains
2 CONC t the flag under which he was born, and for meritoruius conduct on the field of battle he wa
2 CONC s promoted from a private to a captain, and served with distinction throughout the war.
2 CONT Politically he was first a Whig, then a Republican after that party was organized in the fift
2 CONC ies.
2 CONT His death occured on his farm here in 1863.
2 CONT His first wife was Faithful Strickland, she bore him 13 children. Among them Nathaniel J., Wi
2 CONC lliam, Mrs. Mc Adams, Mrs. Rountree. William was a quarter master in the Union Army during th
2 CONC e Civil War.
2 CONT His second wife, Martha Ellen Anderson, was a native of Tennessee, where she grew up and reci
2 CONC eved a limited education. She lived to an advanced age, dying in Stone County, Missouri, in F
2 CONC ebruary 1899. To these parents nine children were born.

2 CONC neers of Augusta county, were three brothers, of Scottish extraction, who came from the Coun
2 CONC ty Down, in Ireland, where they were born -Thomas, John and Andrew Reid. The oldest of thes
2 CONC e brothers, Thomas Reid, married a highland woman, named McKean, and had by her three child
2 CONC ren, two of whom married their cousins, daughters of their uncle, John Reid, Sr., who bore t
2 CONC he title of colonel. These two were Colonel John Reid, Jr., who married his uncle John's dau
2 CONC ghter, Martha; and Nathan, who married his uncle John's daughter, Sarah.The third son of Tho
2 CONC mas Reid, Alexander, came to Kentucky. It was this Alexander Reid, or his son, who represent
2 CONC ed Shelby county in the legislature in 1801, '02 and again in 1806; and it was a descendan
2 CONC t of his, an Alexander Reid, of a later generation, who represented the same county in th
2 CONC e legislature in 1825, '26, '27. Colonel John Reid, Sr., the second of the emigrant brothers
2 CONC , married Martha Nisbet, and had by her a numerous progeny, besides the two daughters abov
2 CONC e mentioned, as having married their cousins. The third brother, Andrew Reid, Sr., had, amon
2 CONC g others, a son, Andrew Reid, Jr., who married Sarah, daughter of his uncle, Colonel John Re
2 CONC id, Sr., and Martha Nisbet, and the widow of his uncle Thomas Reid's son, Nathan. This Andre
2 CONC w Reid, Jr., and Sarah Reid, had six children. One of their sons was General Andrew Reid, o
2 CONC f Rockbridge, who married Magdalen McDowell, twin-sister of the first wife of Judge Caleb Wa
2 CONC llace, and daughter of JudgeSamuel McDowell and Mary McClung. One of the daughters of Andre
2 CONC w Reid, Jr., and Sarah, was Agnes Ann Reid, who married William Alexander, was the mother o
2 CONC f Dr. Archibald Alexander, of Princeton. Their residence stood on the ground now occupied b
2 CONC y the residence of the late General Robert E. Lee, in Lexington, Virginia, and in which Gene
2 CONC ral Custis Lee now resides. A third daughter, Flora, married John Lyle; and Rev. John Lyle
2 CONC , who taught a female seminary at Paris, and established the "Citizen," was one of their son
2 CONC s. This latter married the widow Lapsley, whose maiden name was Irvine, and who was a siste
2 CONC r of the wives of Samuel McDowell, of Mercer, and Colonel Joseph McDowell, of Danville. On
2 CONC e of their sons was John Lyle, of Boyle county, who also married an Irvine. The fifth chil
2 CONC d of Andrew Reid, Jr., and Sarah, was Esther Reid, who married John Cummings, and was the mo
2 CONC ther of Elizabeth Cummings, the wife of Andrew McKnight. Another daughter of Andrew Reid, Jr
2 CONC ., and Sarah-also named Sarah Reid-married Joseph Alexander, the fourth son of Archibald Ale
2 CONC xander and Margaret Parks, brother of William Alexander (who married her sister, Agnes Ann R
2 CONC eid), and uncle of the great preacher and theologian. Sarah Reid, the wife of Andrew, Jr., i
2 CONC n 1766, was murdered, and her body thrown into a creek, by a negro whom she had reproved. A
2 CONC ndrew,son of William Alexander and Agnes Ann Reid-brother of Dr. Archibald-married Anne Ayle
2 CONC tt, and their fifth child, Evaline, was the wife of the distinguished General Samuel McDowel
2 CONC l Moore, referred to on a previous page. Andrew McKnight and Elizabeth Cummings had a son bo
2 CONC rn to them in Virginia, James, who married a Miss Paxton in that state. When this child wa
2 CONC s an infant, they removed to Woodford county, Kentucky, where they bought and lived upon a 
2 CONC farm, and where their other children were born. That they were highly respected by all was b
2 CONC ut natural. For their high character, strong good sense, and quick-witted intelligence, the
2 CONC y were honored by suchmen as Dr. Louis Marshall, and others, who could appreciate their wort
2 CONC h.The REIDS AND MOORES The two eldest children of Judge Samuel McDowell and Mary McClung, bo
2 CONC rn October 9, 1755, were twin sisters, Sarah and Magdalen. The former married Caleb Wallace
2 CONC , a graduate of Princeton-a Presbyterian minister at the time of the marriage. She died soo
2 CONC n, and without issue. Mr. Wallace abandoned the ministry, became a successful lawyer, and wa
2 CONC s one of the first judges of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Magdalen married Andrew Reid. Th
2 CONC eir oldestdaughter, Sarah married Andrew Moore, whose father, also names Andrew, was a soldi
2 CONC er in the French and Indian War. The son distinguished himself for gallantry at Point Pleasa
2 CONC nt. General Andrew Moore, as he was designated, was a member of Congress from the Lexington
2 CONC , Virginia, district from 1789 to 1997; he was re-elected in 1804, and that same year was el
2 CONC ected to the United States Senate, filling the place until 1809. He died in 1821. Hisoldes
2 CONC t son was a member of Congress from 1833 to 1835; was a member of the convention that passe
2 CONC d the ordinance of secession in 1861, against which he voted. Then a very old man, the effor
2 CONC ts of Henry A. Wise to dragoon him into the support of secession met with humiliating failur
2 CONC e. Afterward, he served in the Confederate army. His wife was Evelyn, daughter of William A
2 CONC lexander, of Rockbridge. Their daughter, Sallie Moore, married her cousin, John Harvey Moore
2 CONC . The second son of General Andrew Moore and Sarah Reid was David E.Moore, a lawyer of hig
2 CONC h standing in Lexington, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Harvey, a daughter of Matthew Harve
2 CONC y and sister of Mrs. Wm. A McDowell, and had by her eight children; of whom his son and name
2 CONC sake, David E. Moore, is a prominent member of the bar of Rockbridge. Virginia married Tedfo
2 CONC rd Barclay, and Elizabeth is the wife of the scholarly Prof. Alexander Nelson. A daughter o
2 CONC f Andrew Reid and Magdalen McDowell married a Mr. McCampbell, and their daughter married a V
2 CONC enable, of a family distinguished in Virginia for literary attainments. The second and thir
2 CONC d daughters of Andrew Reid and Magdalen McDowell also married members of the Venable family
2 CONC . The fourth daughter married Judge Abraham Smith, of Rockbridge. The fifth daughter of Andr
2 CONC ew Reid and Magdalen McDowell, married Major John Alexander, of Lexington, Virginia. Their 
2 CONC son, John Alexander, is a lawyer of ability, and a citizen of prominence in Lexington, and t
2 CONC heir daughter, Agnes, was the wife of Rev. Beverly Tucker Lacey, the noted Presbyterian divi
2 CONC ne. The only son of Andrew Reid and Magdalen McDowell, was Dr. Samuel McDowell Reid, a skill
2 CONC ful and distinguished physician of Lexington. He married a Miss Hare, and his daughters marr
2 CONC ied, respectively, Prof. James White and Colonel John S. H. Ross. His son, bearing his own n
